The principle of lateral flow immunoassay technology is to immobilize specific antigens or antibodies on nitrocellulose membranes (NC membranes) in bands, and adsorb another labeled antigen or antibody from sample pad, which has reacted with samples sufficiently.
First, the sample is added to the sample pad at one side of the test strip, which move through sample pad and dissolves and reacts with labeled antigen or antibody through capillarity Second, The antigen-antibody complex move forward and are captured the immobilized specific antibodies on NC membranes specifically, which can be detected and showed red or any other special visible color. And negative result is always showed blank.
Therefore, lateral flow has been developed rapidly in recent years which has been widely used in food safety, disease diagnosis, drug detection, environmental monitoring, etc. Compared to other techniques such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR), the result by lateral flow has showed strong advantages:
1. One-step test, no redundant cleaning process
2. Faster, lower-cost, and small sample size needed
3. The sample testing procedure is simple and easy to operate
4. It can detect a wide variety of substances, including proteins, haptens, nucleic acids, amplification products, etc
5. Direct testing of liquid samples
6. No need for machines to interpret qualitative and semi-quantitative results
7. Qualified meet point-of-care testing
8. Long product validity period, no need for low temperature storage, reduce transportation and storage costs
